Meeting under the most unconventional of circumstances, it is not much of a stretch to say that Tifa is suspicious of Aeris Gainsborough when they begin working together. Having seen the stranger comfortable in the presence of Cloud Strife sparks a rush of confusion and a tinge of jealousy. However, their similarities and the desperation of their situation soon overshadow any potential conflict between them, and the two become friends. They talk and even gossip -- silly conversations the player only catches fractions of -- and develop the deeper understanding only girl friends can.
Although often described as the epitome of innocence, Aeris is far more outgoing than many of her dysfunctional companions. Even sweet Tifa finds herself overwhelmed by Aeris' presence. There is no doubt that the other woman is a breath of fresh air with her cheerful demeanor, but her aggressive approach to handling Cloud pushes Tifa into the background, ultimately making Tifa's actions appear all the more dubious to her own befuddled conscience.

Throughout her lifetime, if anything is swept from Tifa's grasp, all evidence can be traced to Sephiroth as the culprit. Unfortunately, Aeris is no exception. In a shocking twist of fate, Aeris is torn from AVALANCHE when she is murdered by the madman. Like the rest of her comrades, Tifa is saddened and thoroughly shaken by the incident. She falls into a mind-numbing state of shock that is intensified by Cloud's disappearance and sudden reappearance as nothing more than a shell.
Nonetheless -- as the saying goes -- whatever doesn't kill you can only make you stronger, and Tifa decides to pick up where her departed friend left off. With new-found strength and determination, she promises to stay by Cloud's side in his weakened state by being best friend she can. When Cloud is back on his feet -- thanks to Tifa's unwavering dedication -- she remains at his side, all the while holding Aeris' memory close to her heart.
