While growing up in the small town of Nibelheim, Tifa was set on a pedestal by her father and much of the town. In their eyes, she was a pretty, perfect little girl capable of no wrong. She was destined to do them proud simply by being what she was: a lovely thing to look at. Although taking up lessons with Zangan suggested a biting edge, Tifa was content with her rural lifestyle. It was all she knew and all she expected to know. Unfortunately, the infamous visit of a certain general changed all that forever.

Ironically, surviving Nibelheim's destruction broke Tifa up; she was thrown into a foreign environment: a bustling metropolis where one hardly knew his neighbor let alone the entire population. This was a total 180 from what she was used to, and no one cared about the plight of just another lost girl in the city. No one, that is, except Barret Wallace.
An outcast in his own right after his small town was destroyed in Shinra's interest, Barret had also come to Midgar with his young charge -- the recently-orphaned daughter of his friend -- and had his eyes on revenge. The two meet by chance and decide to endure the city's wrath together while simultaneously plotting their rebellion as members of AVALANCHE.

Tifa's relationship with Barret is her closest and most stable. Although her heart lies with another, she and Barret form a team that is not to be taken lightly--both on and off the battlefield. Petty arguments between the two are not uncommon, particularly when Tifa becomes impatient with Barret's outbursts. However, any bickering is dwarfed by their pact to stick together while living in Sector 7 and eventually on the road to save the Planet.
