After finding herself in Midgar as well as in the company of Barret, Tifa joins a resistance movement known as AVALANCHE: a small faction aiming to topple Shinra's tyranny. Although Barret is the leader of their band of rebels, Tifa volunteers her bar as their headquarters, including a secret room in the basement to stake out when necessary. Proclaiming such an allegiance is a tremendous risk on Tifa's part; not only is she part of a conspiracy, but she harbors its members, as well. Should they be found out and their movement traced to her, the consequences would be devastating. Nevertheless, she upholds her duty with her head held high, though she occasionally opts to stay back from missions to care for the bar and Barret's toddler Marlene--a necessary responsibility that cannot simply be forgotten at the drop of a hat.
Although her exact involvement in the movement's revival is unknown, it is clear she is a respected and loved member who the others can turn to in times of need, whether it be for a place to stay, a warm meal, or just someone to talk to. Although she too shares this closeness, nothing can compare to the bond of the faction's second generation, or the grief of losing the first to a mission gone array. With such a loss, the surviving members -- Tifa, Barret, and Cloud -- find there's nowhere to go but forward with new found determination to reach AVALANCHE's goal.

After the collapse of the plate, crushing the slums below and much of AVALANCHE with it, the faction begins to take a different face; the goal shifts ever so slightly from just toppling Shinra to the all encompassing "save the world", and the need for revenge flares. However, as more new members are accumulated, the vague common goal seems to be all that holds them together; some are along to discover lost pasts, others to prove themselves, and still more to protect loved ones from the seemingly imminent apocalypse. Although friendship appears to be a questionable prospect, there is no denying the rag-tag team's sense of dedication, especially in regard to the young barmaid and self-designated maternal figure.
